Feedback Thoughts

I was able to analyze and make a conclusion concerning the best way to give feedback by reading the following articles: Silence the Critical Voices in Your Head Overcoming the Fear of Feedback Try Feedforward Instead of Feedback 7 Key Characteristics of Better Learning Feedback Latte Art.  Commons Wikimedia With coffee being one of my favorite drinks and topics to talk about, I immediately had a connection with the article Overcoming the Fear of Feedback.  One of the key takeaways presented in the article was the pneumonic devise LATTE, L isten to the customer A cknowedge the problem T ake problem-solving action T hank them E explain why the problem occurred. This method is presented to  and followed by baristas working for Starbucks. Barsitas receive hundreds of orders and drink combinations in a day; therefore, there is a greater potential for drink mistakes as well as customer conflict. The customers are always critiquing the quality of their drinks. Just like

Storytelling: MyLife's a Charm

Image
On the hard, cold wooden desk I sat just waiting until the day we would chat. I was yours since the day you were born, but not for long I shall warn.  I watch you both day and night, but never on your mind, always out of sight. I was there to see you walk and cry,  but I hope that when it's time to meet you're not shy.  You toss and turn all night long , trying to fight this pull that's so strong. You wake up with sweats and eyes full of terror,  but then you turn over to see me on you dresser.  You pick me up and twirl me around, knowing that I'm your comfort when comfort can't be found.  Your attachment to me weakens as you mature through the years,  but there's a calling on your life so it appears.  A whole new world and kingdom awaits for you and me, just step into the world of the rakshashi. Beep! Beep! Beep! After five minutes of hearing the annoying alarm clock, Shala finally reaches out from underneath her five down pillows and

Reading Notes: Public Domain Edition, Part B

Image
Part B exhibited the same pattern as Part A when it comes to illustrating admiration and love for women. It also utilized the same word formatting. The author also implemented a couplet style of writing. They flowed really well and rhymed. Although each couplet included new descriptions, the content was still relative. In the story  Anasuya , the passage spoke so highly of Anasuya's child rearing and hospitable behavior. She was so full of wisdom, which is one aspect that I really focus on with my storytelling. I like to highlight the temperate and soft-spoken characters. It is usually the quiet characters that posses the most impish and treacherous acts. Furthermore, I admire the boldness and courage that Rama displays as he ventures out into the night and the darkened, isolated areas forest only illuminated by the beams radiating from the the moon. Even with Rama's damnation to isolation, he must continue to fend for his life. He is not alone in the woods; instead, he is e

Reading Notes: Public Domain Edition, Part A

I really liked the content of Part A in the Public Domain Edition of Ramayana. I noticed that the author used  a lot of imagery to tell the story. There was a lot of detail in regards to rituals, marriages, sacrifices, as well as royalty. From the passage, I noticed that I would need to utilize more descriptions and background stories for new characters. When the passage introduced the two different kingdoms and characters, such as Dasharatha, therew was a hyperlink attachment leading to Wikipedia to further explanation of that character. The reader has the potential to get lost in the plot of the story if there is no connection of new characters to main characters. In addition, labeling the "chapter" also assists with the progression of the story.           Two of my favorite passages were the chapters about Ahyla and Rama and Sita's Wedding. These passages caught my creative eye due to their uniqueness that I would like to implement in my storytelling segme

Growth Mindset

Image
I find it ironic that I have a topic in my course pertaining to growth mindset. I'm in the Miss Black OU pageant and my platform is "Moving your Mindset," which embodies the same content presented by Carol Dweck concerning a fixed perspective. This assignment really clung to me, as I have come to the age where I must learn from failures and engage with my weaknesses. I can attest to having a fixed-mindset at one point, and I'm learning to remove myself from this sort of thinking. In the Ted, Talk,  The Power of Believing that You Can Improve , Dweck used a medical analogy as to why our mindsets can inadvertently become fixed. As a pre-medicine student, her usage of the medical processes regarding brain activity when humans ere pulled me into the talk even the more. She explained to the listener how it is logical and innate that we reply to such errors, but the issue that we must understand is how to alter the response to the negative stimulus and electrical impulse.

Time Strategies

Image Information: Bulletin Board of Post its   Flick r           "Our motivation to start any task depends on us seeing value in it, yet we place more value on what is happening currently over what the future holds and justify this decision by emotionally disconnecting ourselves from our future selves" (Just Starting). These words from Jory Mackay in the article The Important Habit of Just Starting epitomizes the main reasoning as to why we procrastinate and why some of our personal goals remain unaccomplished. A lot of the time people say focus on the now, because we don’t always have tomorrow. This ideology seems to be running ramped in my generation and the generations beneath me. Focusing on the now gives people the opportunity to forget about their responsibilities and to make rash decisions. This is where the term YOLO, you only live once, was derived. After staying up late studying for an exam well into the darker hours of the morning, I heard one o

Reading Options: Option 2: Public Domain Edition

During middle school, all students were required to take language arts. Within the language arts unit, there were several modules that focused on Greek and Roman mythology, fables, and epics. These were my favorite topics to study in middle school, and I've carried those stories with me into adulthood. I've always enjoyed those stories because they parallel to real life and other stories and proverbs in the Bible. I liked learning about the gods and goddesses. After reading to Rama: Avator of Vishnu of Public Domain Editions of  the Ramayan, I read about how the gods ascended to earth as humans and how sacrifices were being made. The passage focused a lot on the war between good and and evil between gods and demons. It continued to speak a sacrificial offerings, wisdom, and the mark of higher gods. I'm excited to learn more about the Indian culture and history. I've only skimmed the surface of the Indian culture, meaning the only information that I really kno

Storybook Favorites

Image
After scrolling through the lists of storybooks, the following stories were my favorite. I went through both the storybooks from the Indian Epics as well as the Myth-Folklore course.  Fifth Dimension        Fifth Dimension captured my interest just from the title. Since my middle school years, I have always been interested in the genres dealing with the supernatural occurrences and romantic fantasy. Even now, as a collegiate student, I enjoy reading novels fantasy novels having do with vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural beings. I watch shows such as Vampire Diaries, Shadowhunters, The Originals, and many others. Therefore, when I saw the title fifth dimension, I immediately had a connection and conjecture that this title is associated with a supernatural world. After reading the introduction, my hypothesis about the content of the story was correct. The title page consisted only of a single picture of the words The Twilight Zone, which was a popular show in the

Week 1 Story: Lessons from the Silver Man

Image
Deep in the heart of the Eastwoods, where weeping, willowy trees can barely be seen through the dense fog, is a petite, wooden cottage paved with cobblestone. Inside the cold, mysterious, and barren cottages lives the silver haired man. The sound of the creaking old chair echoing off the walls signaled the beginning of the elderly man’s daily routine- his only routine. Every day for hours, the silver haired man wrapped in luxurious linens leans back with eyes closed, humming the tune to inaudible music.    An Old Man Asleep by the  Fire painting by Rembrandt This  is the only image that replays in the mind of the villagers that inhabit Westwood, a town at the edge of the swamp that intersects both Westwood and Eastwood. All other talk concerning the silver haired man is hushed. Only the curious and adventurous villagers dare to cross the swamp and peak into the dust collecting window of the silver-haired man, but foreigners peering into window is the greatest extent in whic

My Favorite Place... Favorite...Favor...Fav...F...Flo...Florida

I can hear the seagulls calling in the wind and the children laughing. I hear the crashing of the waves as they lap against the shore and darken the beautiful white sands. I feel every grain of sand compiled into soft mounds underneath my toes, making my feet white. People in patterned and pastel swimsuits are running across the sand with shovels, pails, seashells, and surfboards. I'm at my favorite place, Florida. Since middle school, Florida has been one of my favorite places. There are so many memories associated with the state and the attractions that the state offers. Every year, my family travels to the airport to fly to one of the many cities in Florida. Most of our visits are to the cities of Miami, Orlando, Tampa, or San Destin. This walk through is very helpful. If I had these sort of instructions making my first blog, I would be more blog savvy.

Time To Test

Here's my first post on my new blog. I had to create a blog for a study abroad course two years ago. With that being said, I'm rusty with my "blogging" skills. I'm thankful for these step-by-step instructions.
